6 Things To Do To Celebrate The Veteran In Your Life.

Written by BluntPower | Nov 10, 2022 3:40:07 PM

Of all the groups of people in our country, few deserve our respect and gratitude as much as those who have served in the U.S. military. These brave men and women put their lives on the line in order to protect the freedom and security we enjoy. It is then important that we find ways to use this Veterans Day to give back to the veterans in our lives.

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday that is observed on Nov. 11, each year in honor of those who have served in the United States armed forces. Veterans Day coincides with Armistice Day celebrations in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. While the United States used to observe Armistice Day, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 and is meant to honor and remember all those who have served in the military.

With Veterans Day upon us, now is a great time to think of ways to honor the veterans in your life. Whether you have family members, friends, or coworkers who are veterans, making even small gestures to celebrate them and show them that you care can go a long way. To help you celebrate the veterans in your life, here are six things that you can do to show them love this Veterans Day

-

Treat Them to a Meal

A great way to honor the veterans in your life this Veterans Day would be to make them feel special by treating them to a meal. If you have a friend or coworker who is a veteran, consider offering to take them to their favorite spot for lunch or dinner. Even dropping by to surprise them with a coffee or some homemade cookies can show them that you care. For any veterans in your family, inviting them over for a home-cooked meal is a guaranteed way to make their day. Take this time enjoying a meal together to ask the veterans in your life a few questions about their time in the military. Showing interest in their service and making them the center of attention for a few hours is a simple way to make the veteran(s) in your life feel special.

Fly a Flag

You can also show support for all of the veterans in your neighborhood (not just those in your circle of family and friends) by proudly flying an American flag in front of your house on Veterans Day. While this may seem like a simple gesture, it can go a long way to show the veterans in your neighborhood that you support them and are thinking about them on this day of remembrance. In fact, this simple act can end up making the day of countless veterans you don't know. Of course, when flying a flag outside of your home this Veterans Day, it is important that you are mindful of proper flag etiquette in order to ensure you show the proper respect when honoring the veterans in your life.

Visit a War Memorial

For many veterans, Veterans Day can be a difficult holiday, as they may be reflecting on their time in the military and the friends they lost during their service. A great way to help support the veteran in your life and celebrate the legacy of those they served with would be to take them to a local war memorial. If you are within driving distance of a major city, you can likely find a war memorial that you and your loved one can visit together and spend some time at in remembrance. If you can't find a war memorial to visit, offer to sit with your loved one and hold a moment of silence for the sacrifices of those who have fought to protect our freedom. This support can go a long way in helping the military member in your life through an otherwise difficult day.

Send a Care Package Together

Another great way to honor the veteran in your life and show them that you support all military members is to suggest writing letters, and putting together care packages, to send to active duty military members. Services like Operation Gratitude and Soldiers' Angels can connect you with men and women currently serving overseas and help you send them letters and gifts. This way, you can celebrate the veteran in your life by helping other military members. This also provides you with another opportunity to talk to the veteran in your life about their service history, as you can ask them what being in the military was like and whether they have any ideas for things you should include in a care package that they would have appreciated when they were in the military.

Sign Up to Volunteer

Helping other military members and veterans is a great way to celebrate the veterans in your life, as you can honor them by choosing to give back to those who served to protect our country. The fact is that there are many military members, veterans, and military families who are struggling or in need of assistance, and choosing to volunteer at a VA hospital, or with a charity that provides aid to veterans and military families, is a great way to celebrate your loved one's military service. Organizations like Soldiers' Angels can help connect you with service projects to help veterans in your area. The veterans in your life will be honored to find out that you are choosing to give back to military members and veterans as a way to honor their service history.

Support Veteran-Owned Businesses

Veterans Day is often a popular day for shopping, as many stores offer Veterans Day sales that can help people get ahead on their holiday shopping. However, instead of spending your money at big department stores, consider shopping at veteran-owned businesses in your neighborhood. This allows you to show your support for veterans while also supporting the local economy. Consider taking the veteran in your life with you shopping to help connect them with veteran-owned businesses in the community that they will also enjoy supporting.
