How long does weed stay in your system?

Most people who smoke weed have asked this question. Whether you are trying to get a new job or need to pass a physical for your sports team, knowing how your body reacts to weed is crucial.

Unfortunately, this is a complicated question.  The reason is marijuana affects different parts of the body in different ways.  So there is no one answer.  But here’s what you need to know.

Blunts, weed, marijuana – it’s all THC

The thing weed has that separates it from hemp is THC – Tetrahydrocannabinol.  This is what gets you high, and what you don’t want your future boss to be able to see.

THC will stay in your fat cells for a loooong time – the half life is approximately 10 days.  But this varies by a lot of factors – the potency of the weed, your size, weight, etc.

So if you smoke blunts on a regular basis it could be up to two months or longer before you would pass a piss test.  Occasional users might be able to pass one in three weeks.  But piss tests aren’t the thing to be most concerned about.

Hair drug tests can go back years

These dreaded drug tests are feared by stoners for a good reason - they can detect even casual use for almost 90 days – in some cases even years!  This is because most drug tests only test the root and then about 2”.  But if you have really long hair they could detect if going back almost three years!

Blood tests only detect recent smoking

Your blood also houses the smoky secrets you wish to hide.  But because your body metabolizes the THC, it only stays in your bloodstream for about 48 hours.

However, for regular users this could be up to a week as it would take longer to metabolize ALL those blunt after effects.

Saliva also holds the secret for a short period of time

Much like a blood test, a saliva test, or “Cheek swab” only detects weed for about 2 days.  This can even be lessened by drinking a lot of water, using mouthwash, or eating a bunch of peanut butter.

Bottom line – know what test you are going to get

Weed can stay in your hair for a long time, in your urine for about a month, and blood and saliva for a few days.  So if you think you are going to be tested for drugs, try and find out what kind of test you are going to take.  If you know that, there are ways to beat it.
